The centrifugal pump industry is going through major changes to meet the new derivative from the European Union. The Energy using Products (EuP) directive for electric motors (EC640/2009) sets strict new requirements for energy efficiency in industrial applications. The directive is relevant for nearly all electric motors in the power range of 0.75 kW to 375 kW, and introduces a new mandatory scale for their efficiency. This scale starts with IE1 as the lowest and current efficiencystandard and has IE3 as the highest. The directive came into effect in mid-2011 and will gradually increase efficiency requirements in a 3-stage process.
